Fossil fuel leading Australia to a Deadly Recovery
Oil, gas and coal are at their core, toxic substances. And as a result, they are dangerous to humans and wildlife.
Direct impacts of fossil fuel extraction included noise disturbance, pollution, destruction, and fragmentation—splitting up forests or landscapes into fragments too small to sustain wildlife populations.
Fossil fuels produce large quantities of carbon dioxide when burned. Carbon emissions trap heat in the atmosphere and lead to climate change.
When fossil fuels are burned, they release nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, which contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain.
Australia’s rate of extinctions is expected to continue on the same trajectory due to ongoing land clearing, habitat degradation, bushfire and continued pressure from cats, foxes and other feral animals such as deer.
Almost all species on the list of extinctions had lost at least 30% of their habitat and going extinct.
“Fifty animal species and 60 plant species at minimum have become extinct, including 30 mammals. That’s 35 per cent of global mammal extinctions. That’s a massive number.”
The Leadbeater’s possum was thought extinct in the 1950s, rediscovered in the 1960s, but now appears to be on its way to extinction because of habitat loss.
